I have been asked to recommend driving instructions to Provence from Calais. For the love of humanity, I am happy to oblige and my answer is simple.
Follow the autoroutes all the way from Calais to Nice (or wherever you are stopping). Go via Reims, Troyes, Lyon, Aix-en-Prfovence. It's 1200 km, should take about 10 hours - subject to stops and average speed - and will cost about 80 euros all told in peage toll fees. You'll burn about 100 litres of fuel.
If you want to overnight, I'd get to at least Beaune, but maybe as far as Macon. Regarding what to about Lyon - drive through the city, ignoring the planners' attempt to get you to go round.
For more information, try the Autoroute website - there's a route and cost calculator.

Thank you very much, I'm sure this information will be very useful!
